Short answer: If your WhatsApp message got no response, wait two to three days (one to two on a warm, active thread) and send one polite, complete follow-up in their daytime: your name, one line of context, and a question they can answer in a word. If that gets nothing, send a second follow-up about a week later that adds something new or makes the ask smaller, then one last message that closes the loop. Never mention the blue ticks.

For much of the world, WhatsApp is where business actually happens. That makes it the highest-reach follow-up channel you have for international contacts, and the easiest one to get wrong.

WhatsApp sits closer to a text than an email: it lives on the personal phone, next to family group chats. Across Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia it is also a completely normal business channel, often the preferred one.

So the etiquette is a blend: business substance, personal-channel manners. The person gave you this number, usually in person or after a warm introduction, and every message you send is judged by whether it honors that.

When WhatsApp Is the Right Channel

Use WhatsApp when:

They messaged you there first, or gave you their number knowing that is where you would write.
The contact is international and WhatsApp is the business norm in their country. Forcing email on a WhatsApp-native contact adds days of latency for no reason.
You met in person and the exchange was warm: a conference, a dinner, an introduction.
The thread needs speed: confirming logistics, a quick answer, keeping momentum after a meeting.

Use email instead when:

The message needs length, attachments with formatting, or several people copied in.
The relationship is formal or the industry expects a paper trail.
You never actually exchanged numbers. A WhatsApp message from a scraped number is an intrusion everywhere on earth.

Etiquette Rules That Keep You Welcome

Their business hours, their time zone. International follow-up means someone's phone buzzing at 2am unless you check. Schedule for their morning.
One message, complete. Not "Hi" followed by a pause and five more bubbles. Say the whole thing in one message so the notification carries the substance.
Never mention read receipts. "I saw you read my message" is surveillance, not follow-up. Write as if you do not know.
Wait 1 to 2 days on warm, active threads, 2 to 3 otherwise. WhatsApp is fast; a same-day double message is pressure. Two follow-ups at most, then let it rest or switch channels.
Voice notes only after they send one first. A voice note assumes intimacy. Mirror, never lead, with formality choices.

When should you send a WhatsApp follow-up after no response?

Two to three days after the first message, in their daytime, and check the ticks first. Two grey ticks means delivered but unread, so wait; two blue ticks means read, so the silence is a decision.

Send one follow-up that adds the thing they would want or shrinks the ask. A second follow-up about a week later, then one polite closing message at most, and stop.

One complete, polite message: who you are, what it is about, and a question they can answer in a word. Do not send "Hi" on its own and wait.

What should the second WhatsApp follow-up say?

Keep it to two lines. The first gives them something: the price, the photo, the date you promised. The second turns the ask into one tap, a yes or a day of the week.

Do not repeat the first message and do not ask whether they saw it; the ticks already told you.

Hi Amir, the distribution sheet you asked about is attached. If a 20-minute call next week is useful, just send a day; if not, no problem at all.

Why it works: it changes something, asks for one small thing, and makes "no" easy to say.

Hi [Name], one update since my last message: [new detail]. Is this still a priority on your side, or better to revisit later?

Hi [Name], to make it easier: would you prefer a 10-minute call, or shall I just send the details here?

Why they work: each one brings something new or turns the ask into a choice, so replying takes no effort.

What should the last WhatsApp follow-up say?

The last message closes the loop politely. Say this is the last one, leave the door open, and offer to check back later. Do not repeat the ask or mention that they read your earlier messages.

Hi [Name], this is my last message about [topic], I know your chats are busy. If the timing gets better, just reply here anytime. All the best with [their project].

Hi [Name], I'll pause here on [topic]. Shall I check back with you in [month], or leave it with you?

Why they work: they end on good terms, and a "check back in March" reply gives you a date for the next one.

8 WhatsApp Follow-Up Templates by Scenario

Each is one self-contained message. Replace the brackets, match their level of formality, and send during their business hours.

1. After meeting at an event

Hi [Name], [You] from [event], we talked about [topic] by the [place]. Really enjoyed that conversation. You mentioned [their challenge]; I have something on exactly that. Want me to send it here or by email?

Why it works: it identifies you fully (your name may not be saved yet), proves you listened, and lets them choose the channel.

2. After an unanswered email

Hi [Name], I emailed you a couple of days ago about [topic] and know inboxes get buried, so trying you here instead. Short version: [one-line ask]. Is this channel easier for you?

Why it works: it explains the channel switch honestly and offers WhatsApp as a convenience, not an escalation.

3. The gentle nudge (message unanswered 2+ days)

Hi [Name], just floating my last message back up. No rush at all, whenever the timing works on your side. If it is easier, a one-word answer is plenty for now.

Why it works: it lowers the reply cost to a single word, which is often all a busy person can give from their phone.

4. After sending a proposal or quote

Hi [Name], following up on the proposal I sent [day]. Happy to walk through any part of it on a quick call, or answer questions right here. Is it still tracking for [their timeline]?

Why it works: it anchors to their own timeline and offers help in whichever format suits them.

5. The new-information message

Hi [Name], quick one: [relevant update, article, or result] came up since we spoke and it made me think of [their situation]. Want the details?

Why it works: it gives before it asks. An update is welcome where a repeat request is not.

6. Confirming a meeting

Hi [Name], looking forward to [day] at [time] ([their time zone]). I will send the video link the morning of. Anything you want me to prepare beforehand?

Why it works: logistics are WhatsApp's home turf, and the closing question opens substance without demanding it.

7. The permission-to-close message

Hi [Name], I do not want to clutter your chats. If this is not the moment, tell me and I will leave it with you; if it is still interesting, I am right here. Either answer is a good answer.

Why it works: respect for the personal channel, stated out loud, is disarming, and it usually earns an honest reply.

8. The re-engagement message (30+ days dormant)

Hi [Name], it has been a while since [how you met or last spoke]. [One-line update or reason to reconnect.] How have things been on your side?

What to Do After the Message

If they reply, keep the conversation where they replied; move to email only when the content demands it, and say why. Log what was said while it is fresh, because WhatsApp threads scroll away faster than inboxes.

If they do not reply after two follow-ups, the channel has answered: switch to email if you have it, or let the thread rest and re-engage in a month with something new.
